Work Sharing in Virtual Project Teams
Concern about maximising the performance of virtual teams for project delivery prompted this international engineering organization to request an independent review of current arrangements for work sharing. Recent experience of collaboration between offices in UK, India and Algeria formed the basis of the review.
We designed a semi-structured survey, consisting of interviews with a cross section of people experienced with work share arrangements. Corporate and project-specific documents, as well as external benchmarks, were considered as context and framing for the interviews.
Several themes emerged from the interviews, broadly grouped into culture, competence and controls. A structured list of recommendations was presented to the project steering group, together with a roll-out plan, including a maturity assessment matrix to enable performance improvement to be periodically evaluated.
