Our first task was to help the client’s team to devise a collaborative approach to involve the global business in agreeing objectives, setting standards, mapping processes and consolidating procedures. Then we moved to a more hands-on but strategic piece of work, benchmarking the client's existing management system against eight models: ISO 9001, IMO/ISM, EFQM, 3 major operators, one mid-sized operator and one service provider. All of this was already in our bag of experience, but we also needed to get a quick and deep understanding of the client’s business model in order to evaluate, select and map elements of the benchmarked systems to a new and relevant solution for BW Offshore.
There is more to life than ISO standards. When you look across industries like energy and shipping and see the creativity and diversity in their solutions, you are reminded that ISO 9001 is only an optional stepping stone on the long road to quality.
This exercise provided a rich source of comparison and learning from which we were able to create a proposed management system structure. Our report featured six key elements: Objectives, Content, Processes, IT Platform, Organization and Governance. We provided details on all these elements plus a recommended hierarchy with ownership, line of sight, interfaces, success factors and a roadmap for implementation. The big picture was captured in a full system infographic.

"This is the kind of project that sets QFactorial apart from other quality consultants who are limited by working entirely within the world of ISO 9001 and similar standards. Aside from the privilege of working with one of the leading contractor/operators in the energy and marine sectors, we also had the rare opportunity to research and appreciate the differences in standards and approaches across these safety-critical industries.
